Chris,
Now that Essex Parish Registers are on line the family mentioned on dennissellerfamily.org site are shown as Shuttlewood from East Hanningfield, Essex and not Shuttleworth but the site has been invaluable to my research. My thanks to you and Kay for your help.

Chris,
I,ve looked at the dennissellersfamily.org site and I am now sure that is my family but with a name change. Over 300 years I think it would be fair to assume that name changes can occur. Even today I get called that name on official documents. The site is brilliant for anyone with ancestors in that part of Essex.
Once again thank you for your help.

Thank you Chris and Kay for your help. I've just tried the sites you have suggested but no luck so I will do as you suggest and contact the National Archives.

My GGGgrandfather Thomas Shuttlewood (b.1765) served in the Royal Navy between 1780 and 1802 on HMS Raccoon. I would be grateful if anyone knows how I could obtain his service record to establish where he was born. I believe that he was born in Ingatestone in Essex but cannot prove it. His date of birth was taken from his death certificate (age).
