Numerous times I have found an ancestor on BMD only to find the MOTHERS MAIDEN NAME not there so have had to send for a copy of the certificate at nearly £10 a time just to find that out. Why is the MMN not shown on line , does anyone know?

Mothers maiden name was only added to birth record in 1911. Likewise with spouses surnames in marriage records

Rather than spending money on a certificate you can do a little detecting by finding the child on a census, note the parents' names, make a guess at date of marriage from the oldest child's age then look for a marriage that matches on FreeBMD. Of course you then should buy a certificate or two for confirmation.

The spouse's surname was added to the GRO m.index in 1912q1, the mum's MS to the b.index in 1911q3, and the age at death to the d.index in 1866q1. Of course, the certificate being indexed has the item on it.

Whilst the above is true of the GRO index, it's not necessarily true of the local registrar's index, and some of these are online - See
