Hi Was wondering if anyone can help. I can't decipher the records on a 1861 census and am looking for the place of birth of a relative. The abbrievation says "Brish of Ross..." Any ideas?? Thanks in advance

Now Penny has posted the 1881, looked at the 1861on the original i can now see it states Parish of Ross & Cromarty.

As far as I know, (and stand to be corrected) no, you can't view Scottish records on this site.

The only place you can view the originals is Scotlandspeople, which is a pay to view site.

Both Ancestry and Findmypast have a number of transcribed census records, but as you have discovered, there can be differences in interpreting the images!

Sorry to contradict you, George, but I think it says "Parish of Ross Herefordshire" - making himEnglish not Scottish!

The 1881 image does not mention Cromarty - it is just "Ross"

familysearch has several baptims for children of Thomas Sprake with a wife Ann, including and Edwin Hewlett Sparke, baptised 1826 in Ross, Herefordshire.

All I posted was the 1881 transcription!, highlighting what it said,

I agree that Ross, herefordshire is far more realistic ( as In Ross on Wye I guess)
