Like the UK, Canada does not normally issue BMDs.
In this case, the 1911 image
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/1911/pdf/e002074260.pdf
gives Dalla's pob as O=Ontario (Allan & Ada immig 1907)

In Ontario, civil registration dates from July 1, 1869. The Archives of Ontario holds records of births from 1869 to 1913, marriages from 1869 to 1928, and deaths from 1869 to 1938. Incomplete marriage registers prior to 1869 are also available.

Ancestry should have this b.cert online - your best bet is to ask for a look up and for someone to email you the image of the rego.

It's not clear where sister Hilda D Powell in 1912 was born.
Since it's likely to be Quebec, note that Ancestry.com is making the Quebec (Drouin) BMDs available tomorrow (12/10/11) possibly for 1 day only.

I tried to obtain a canadian birth certificate. The record office in Toronto sent me six pages of forms to fill in asking things like what what the doctor's name was, the birthweight of the child and many other questions which were impossible to answer. In fact, if I'd had the information they wanted already, I wouldn't have needed the birth certificate.

Sandra, the link provided by Porkie Pie to Servicecanada is a good one.

However, I have discovered that it's not easy to apply for copy certificates in Canada unless you have documentary proof of your relationship to the person whose certificate you want. Unlike the UK, where copies of certificates are generally available to anyone who asks and who has the correct information, Canada seems to take the view that certs will only be provided to people who need duplicates of their own birth/marriage, etc.

A contact on Ancestry Canada pointed me to the Pages of the Past segment of The Toronto Star. This site has every issue of the newspaper online since 1800 and something. I have found it immensely useful and it may give you as much info as a certificate would. You do need to trawl through and it can be time consuming, but I found it very worthwhile. Of course, if it's not Ontario you need, it may not help, but there may be other online periodicals for other parts of Canada that may come up with the goods.

Just a thought - anyway, good luck in your endeavours!

I would say, according to the 1911 census Della/Dalla was born in Ontario.

Please could anyone let me know how to go about obtaining a birth certificate form Canada. I believe my grandmother Della Mae Powell was born there in 1909 and her sister Hilda D Powell in 1912.
The 1911 places the family in Montreal St Antoine, Province Quebec.

Many thanks

Sandra
