For info - found this from previous GR postings re records.

From Phil:-

"To clear something up, Genes Reunited and Find My Past, along with several other websites are owned and developed by staff who work for Bright Solid. All data records are either owned by Bright Solid or licensed to Bright Solid for use via these websites. With regard to transcription errors. We try to update all sources when we get informed of errors, so yes you may see them corrected in both (i.e. GR & FMP) sites."

and, from Estelle:-

"..... there is some reference to the idea that Genes Reunited don't hold our own records. I can assure you that all records you find on Genes Reunited are hosted by Genes Reunited. We pay commission to record providers in order to supply these records to our members, and at no time do we divert you to other sites to gain access to the records."

Some but not all Avtars are, or at least were, out of line when I was looking at some older threads an hour or so ago.

LOL - I wonder how IGP would have reacted to having my Sunflower :-D :-D At least any tinkering happened in the wee small UK hours.

jax

that is because GR does not have its own records, they buy them from the other sites, or pay the other sites to allow members to access the records, or however you want to phrase it!

and ti would only make sense that fmp and GR share the database, as they are both in the same stable.

I am NOT seeing things!

I am NOT going crazy!

but no-one will believe me when I say that jax had my pink bear, IGP had the sunflower, DET had the green pen, etc etc etc

If GR Host their own records how is it that when I have corrected a mistranscribed name on FMP it is suddenly then correct on Genes also?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 23 Oct 2011 20:42

actually, I think it would be truer to say that GR host records from other sites.

I do not believe that they have gone to the time and expense of transcribing their own version of records.

I think it is possible that they have moved on, at least in many cases, from transferring you to an outside site in order to see a record.

I think they are paying these other sites for the privilege of having the records on this site

and this is what has led to the enormous increase in membership costs, and in pay-per-view for records that are not included even in the Platinum membership.

I still maintain that many of these records can be found easier and cehaper (even free) on the other sites!

Estelle is a GR employee. She has several Blogs here

Who is Estelle?

And did she identify the sources?

GR struggle to even keep the site running efficiently, without finding time to transcribe records.............

Estelle mentioned in a reply a few weeks ago that GR do in fact host their own records.

As suggested, do a free search before you spend your money. Is it possible for you to pay to view to see what details are included before you commit to an upgraded sub?

Having done a free search myself, a couple of possibles came up, which are I know can be accessed on free sites.

Always, always do an internet search for your parish or county PR - there are quite a number of fee access sites around.
And don't forget http://www.freereg.org.uk/ Records transcribed on there will give any notes from the Register, unlike familysearch which just gives the vital information.

Flick Report 23 Oct 2011 09:30

GR don't have ANY records of their own.

Everything they offer is from other sites...............

Cass

It seems from what people have been posting that many people are not finding information.

You can search the records for free, and see if anything comes up.

I did try this the other night ............... I looked for 2 records that I knew did exist. They did not show up on GR, yet I had found them the previous evening on the familysearch site mentioned below.

Have you tried searching the new beta.familysearch site

all records on there are supposed to ahve been taken from the actual Parish Registers, ie no submitted (and prossibly made up) entries

www.familysearch.org/#form=advanced-records

Also several UK counties have their own Online Parish Clerks sites ...... look at the following site to see if a county of interst to you is on there

www.onlineparishclerks.org.uk/

also ancestry is now carrying a lot of parish records ....... and so is findmypast (and this may be where GR is getting its records from).

JUST TRYING TO DECIDE IF IT'S WORTH ADDING THE PARISH RECORDS? DOES IT GIVE GOOD INFORMATION OR NOTHING MORE THAN WE ALREADY HAVE?
DO YOU HAVE IT, HAS IT HELPED YOU?
