The gro record is when they were reg not born .
My dad was born 28th Dec 1907.his mum registered him in the last week of Jan so his birth GRO record is Mar qtr1908.

Its something we get used too when lookng for info !!

I should think that many children born in Christmas week were registered in January, whatever the year.

Not always, but quite common I expect.

But as GB says, this is the index of the REGISTRATION of the birth (which can be up to six weeks after), not an index of the birth itself.
Full details regarding the date of the birth itself will be be on the cert when you get that.

The GRO index are listed in the quarter that the event was registered for births this can be the quarter after the event took place as you had 6 weeks to register

Jan-Mar 1917 refers to when the event was registered, it does not and never has inferred born in 1917. You have to obtain the cert to find that out. Only marriages are always registered in the quarter that they took place, not births or deaths, although many will be, of course.

Have a look on this little site for lots of info regarding BMD's

You had 6 weeks to register a birth

So the entry is correct

Why would you want to "put it right"
