Would someone be able to guide me in the right direction regarding how to get hold of a coroner's report for my ancestor who died in 1857 in the parish of St Lukes Chelsea Middlesex? Not sure where to start looking first :-S

A coroners report is unlikely to have been kept, but I would imagine that if it was, London Metropolitan Archives would have it.

The best source, though, in the probable absence of a coroners report, would be a newspaper article on his death or inquest.

Thank you anyway. It was my 3x ggmother and I have very little to go on with her except 1851 misspelt where she came from and is too ambiguous. Just looking for any signposts really as hit a brick wall.

Hi Marion,

I don't know whether this will help as it's not a coroner's report.

I found my grandfather's inquest via the local newspapers. I didn't know there was an inquest untill I got his death certificate. I contacted all the local newspapers in his area and was lucky enough to get a copy of the article. It wasn't the full inquest details, but it certainly gave me enough new information. So try that, you never know.

Good Luck, Lou

Thank you for all your input. A coroner gave the verdict, but from what I understand there won't be much more info othet than what's on death certificate. I think looking for newspaper article for that year will be like looking for a needle in a haystack :(

Hi Marion,

As mentioned before I found my granddad's inquest in the local newspaper. He died in Middlesex too. You could start your search by asking for a burial look up - failing that, you could search all the cemeteries in the area asking for a look up. Give them as much info as you can. Once you have narrowed down the area start searching to find which local papers were around then and still around today and ask for a search.

I found mine that way and none of them charged a penny, I even got sent a copy of the newspaper article free of charge.

Good Luck, Lou

You can search a lot of old newspapers online - not just the Times. Your local library may have the records - try looking at their website. Or join Lancashire libraries online. You'd be surprised what gets published where back then - they liked a bit of scandal!
