Don't know whether this helps or not:
Newby, Cumbria
Newby, Lancashire
Newby, Craven, North Yorkshire
Newby, Hambleton, North Yorkshire
Newby, Huby, Harrogate, North Yorkshire
Newby, Skelton-on-Ure, Harrogate, North Yorkshire
Newby, Scarborough, North Yorkshire
Newby Wiske, Hambleton, North Yorkshire
Newby Bridge, Cumbria
Newby East, Cumbria
Newby West, Cumbria
Newby Head, North Yorkshire

And many of the county borders have changed over the years and now I feel I've made it worse, but good luck.

thank you for the input on Neby. I have come across a christening on the IGI that took place in 1832 at Knaresborough.

This states parents as Thomas and Margaret SHEPHERD so will see if I can find a census record that relates. It could lead me somewhere.

many thanks

When you have his marriage cert, let us know his father's details.............so that census searches can be tried

Assuming it's an old spelling of Newby, then there are at least 4 places - try a look up on:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/

There's the one Quoy found - I think both refer to a place 5km SE of Ripon.
Maybe Lindsey's is the one 5km NNW of Stokesley.
There's also one 4km NW of Scarborough, and one 5km SE of Ingleton.

Neby-upon-Ure 1713-1744 in the West Riding Yorkshire

A tree on ancestry gives

John Shepherd
Birth 1832 ? in Ashworth, Lancashire, England
Death 1918 ? in Rangiora, North Canterbury, New Zealand

Margaret Langford
Birth abt 1849 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England
Death 16 June 1921

It says they married in christchurch 1870, you will need their marriage cert for better details of his parents.
It should be easier to find him on the 1861 and 1851 censuses then.

Irene

Irene Report 25 Oct 2011 04:02

Has anybody ever heard of a place called Neby in Yorkshire?

On a couple of birth certificates for the children of John SHEPHERD, it states that the father John SHEPHERD was born in what definitely looks like Neby. I can't find anything that relates so thought I would throw my brick wall out there to see if I can break through

Many thanks
