When you have a little more information about your family, it may be useful to contact the Wigan History Shop. They hold many records for Wigan including parish registers/businesses/organisations etc. They may well hold something about boatmen.

Using http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1862
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
MALLEY Ellen Wigan Wigan & Leigh PORTER WIG/65/471

As far as I'm aware, there is no special site for Wigan boatmen.
There is a nice general Wigan site that has cemetery info as well as modern pics of 83% of streets:

There's also a general pic site which often has modern canal pics, e.g.:

To find if your family is connected it's best to work backwards from your family.

Anyone got information on the Malley family who were canal boatmen? 1871 Census shows them living in the Pottery area of Wigan and then they moved to New Springs near Aspull. My family is connected somehow and I`m trying to find this connection via marriage surnames.
Ormskirk Family History has a wonderful website on Burscough boatmen and I`m wondering if there is something similar for Wigan.
