On the 1861 census there is an entry crossed out for a Mr and Mrs Gordon and then it says Absent. so are they at the grandparents????

I have all the details I need about Alfred Smith. It's Arthur Gordon that I am stuck with really. There is no record of May or Arthur on the 1911 Census
I have no idea when Arthur was born, I am guessing around 1880.

How old were they? the couple I mean. what age did they say they were?
Who were the witnesses to the marriage?

I have hit the proverbial brick wall very hard!
May Charlotte Gordon born around 1906 married my great uncle Alfred Amrose Smith at Greenwich Registry Office on 20/2/1926. May's father is listed as Arthur Michael Wingfield Gordon. (I think the middle names are correct - the wrting isn't too clever!)
My problem is that I can't find any reference to any births for either of them.There is an entry for May Charlotte born in Canterbury, but nothing at all for Arthur. The address for the Gordon's on the certificate didn't exsist on the 1911 census.
Can anyone help me please? :-)
