Yes, you do. The Diaries aren't online.

Thanks Ann, you have to go there in person for that, don't you?

It might be worth searching the War Diary for his particular unit, assuming it has survived. It MIGHT (probably a big might!) get a mention. War Diary will be at the National Archives.

Thanks for your replies. I had googled for hours and there's nothing coming up on NTA.
I will try that link for the RGA.
thanks again.

Perhaps you could contact the museum for the Royal Regiment Artillery here:-

http://www.firepower.org.uk/research/index.asp

They may have documents that give more details.

Hello,
After waiting since January for my Grandads Service Records they arrived today. I knew that he was mentioned in Dispatches (London Gazette) but was hoping to get some indication as to why? He was in the Royal Regt Artillery. When I was a child he told me that he carried an injured comrade for miles through the jungle in Burma even though he had been shot in the hand himself - the scar used to fascinate me!
Unfortunately the records tell me nothing. Does anyone know where/how I can find out why he was Mentioned in Dispatches please.
Thanks,
DF
