Ooh, Perchino, this looks promising. I still haven't brought documents home from work (it's been very busy, being so close to Christmas break up) for the ID number in George's Army pay record, but this has reminded me and I will do today. Thank you very much for searching this. Have a good day. Toni

Thanks for this Susan, Quoy, Perchino & MarieCeleste. There is an ID no. in the Army pay book (sorry, I did mean to include this), but I have stupidly left documents at work. I will post details on Monday. One question Perchino, I couldn't understand your message - have you tried a pm (?) etc. Would you mind explaining. Unfortunately, MarieCeleste, the info you've given doesn't seem to match. George was married (last Will & testament at back of Army pay book states his wife's name as Mrs G Strudwick (no maiden name), living in Woking, Surrey - part of address missing where hole goes through book. Thanks again, Toni

Thanks for this Perchino - very kind. Well that's a relief (not showing as casualty in Commonwealth War Graves), but doesn't explain what looks like a bullet hole in documents and wallet. Yes, sorry station is Grainthorpe - a bit of a typo on my part!

Perchino

Perchino Report 6 Dec 2011 22:18

No casualty of that name on Commonwealth War Graves site.

Station may be Grainthorpe, Lincs

Can anyone please tell me how I can gain more information about someone whose Army service pay book (which includes the name, regiment, squadron and soldier's number) I have in my possession. The pay book, together with other items: a small French dictionary, The Pocket Gospel of St. John and a leather wallett/cigarette case have what looks like a bullet hole going through them. I would like to find out what happened to the soldier and possibly return the items to his descendants. With thanks, Toni
