Chelsea Pensioners

Hi
I have an ancester called Charles Clay, born, according to the 1841 census, in 1776 in Hinckley Leicestershire. On the census it says that he was an army pensioner.

I have put a search in on Find My Past for the Chelsea Pensioners and the only Charles Clay that came up for that area was born in Nuneaton, Warwickshire which is only about six miles from Hinckley but he joined the army in 1770 at the age of eighteen so that would make him too old.

Does anyone know of any other type of army pension apart from Chelsea or could some of the records have been missed off or something like that.

Many thanks
Lindsey

The nuneaton guy joined up in 1770 and was 62 at time of discharge in 1814 so would seem to be too old.

Hi LadyKira

Yes that is my Charles Clay as he was married to Elizabeth so that could be his brother perhaps.

Thanks very much for the information, I will look into it.

Looks like Elizabeth was a widow in 1851.
