Go to the LDS site, and download the PAF program to your computer

Or look on the internet and download one of the many other programs available for use on your own computer.

Once you have a program on your computer, you will be able to import the Gedcom

This site (GR) is public and insecure............

You do need some family tree software to look at a gedcom file properly. I believe there are free programs available as I have seen references on other thread.

The gedcom file is actually a text file which you can open with notepad or similar text program, but although you will recognise much of the content it will not show you how your tree looks.

if you have the time and inclination, you could edit all the names you want to hide from tree searches.

Call them something like Unknown Unknown or Hidden Living.

I agree with Margee, I only have living people on my own tree on my own computer, on here and other public trees I only have myself.

If you put living people onto a public tree the you should ask their permission first.

I don't think it's wise to put any living people on an online tree. You just can't be assured that the names will not become public. I'm the only living person on my online tree, not my husband, siblings, children or grandchildren.

Put it onto a familty tree making program on your own computer and just leave a skeleton tree on here. much safer.
Of course you wont get any Hot matches !
I've seen plenty of trees with just the owners name.
