You may have to put it down to phonetics, especially if they couldn't read/write to check what had been recorded.

For instance, one of my Kentish lot had the surname recorded by different Registrars/Clergy as

Fairbeard
Farebiard
Farebeard

You have to say it to see the problem :-0

Jax> That isn't a first marriage that Eliza is Elizabeths sister and she married Thomas Leonard as patchem said.

Patchem> Yes there could esily be another child, there could be more of them that died and without certificates we cannot tell those.

MissBatman> After Isaac's death she did marry again to the forementioned John Young and had a couple of kids. Thanks for the 1871 census clue however it doesn't help with the Stack/Stagg query annoyingly.

Regards

Rhys

Jax,
I think that Eliza Ann marries Thomas Leonard and shows in all the censuses in 1871 to 1901.

These could be the Elizabeth and Eliza in 1851:
Elizabeth Stagg
Age: 4 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847
Relation: Daughter Father's Name: Mark Stagg Mother's name: Mary Stagg
Gender: Female Where born: Lanton, Monmouthshire, Wales
Civil Parish or Township: Llantarnam County/Island: Monmouthshire
Country: Wales Registration district: Newport Sub-registration district: St Woollos
ED, institution, or vessel: 14b Piece: 2453 Folio: 253 Page Number: 26 Household schedule number: 96
Mark Stagg 38
Mary Stagg 28
xxx Elisa Stagg 5
xxx Elizabeth Stagg 4
Mary Maria Stagg 2
Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2453; Folio: 253; Page: 26; GSU roll: 104194.

meefy,
As you have not got the 1871, you do not know that Ada is the oldest child, as one born before 1871 could have died or be living with grandparents or even a servant in 1881.

After looking through all the messages in my inbox, I have found out where I got Stagg from. Someone has gotten the forementioned Ada Collins' birth certificate and on it it states Stagg as the mothers maiden name.

However this still doesn't explain why others have Stack down and why there doesn't seem to be a marriage listed anywhere.

Might be worth checking this one out on the 1861, the age is a little out but it could be a first marriage...

Isaac here is a 'fellmonger' which is not far out from slaughterman..

EDIT I can't find a match for this one on 1871 either.

ReEDIT...probably not as there is another Isaac in 1851 that matches up with this...not yours.

1871 is the one census I cannot find him anywhere and I've looked for his future wife under both surnames in case they were not married then. Looks like its gonna have to be a certificate.

You need the birth certificate of any of the children to confirm maiden name.

meefy Report 26 Dec 2011 17:21

Its been a while since I did any work on this part of the tree and I have his wife down as an Elizabeth or Eliza Stagg. However whenever I get links to other peoples trees they seem to have it down as an Elizabeth or Eliza Stack and this has created doubt in my mind especially as I can't find information to confirm either.

Their first child Ada was born in Newport in 1873, so its some time before then. Isaac was born in c1841 in Haroldston, Haverfordwest and Eliza was born in the Newport area c1847.

I have no idea where I got the Stagg from and I cannot find a Stack either to refute what I have in my tree. Can anyone help me out?
