I think the one Quoy was referring to was Henry Moubray Northcote who received his B.A then.

It's tricky to figure out who is related to whom and how!

Quoy - I didn't receive the degrees listed by you - just that a Henry M Northcote had them conferred on 22 November at Oxford. Would you re-send please?

Also MaureeninNY (above) has Henry at Cambridge, not Oxford.

To be called to the bar, one had to pass the bar exams and attend a certain # of dinners. In your guys case, these were be held at the Middle Temple in London. It wasn't then necessary to have a law degree. I think this is still the case, although having a law degree got exemptions from passing certain bits of the bar exams.

At that time there were only 3 universities in England - Oxford, Cambridge and London (UCL, King's), although there were 5 others in the UK (Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrew's, Trinity College Dublin).

Cambridge not Oxford in his case:

I can only find reference to Henry in Peerage.com and briefly in County Families of the United Kingdon, or royal Manual of Title and Untitled Aristocracy of GB

They state that he was descended from common ancestor with Sir Stafford Northcote.

To be called to the Bar, would he have been educated at Oxford in those days like his relation Sir Stafford?

Have you tried searching on Google?

My above ancestory was 'called to the Bar, Middle Temple' in 1849. He was related to Sir Stafford Henry Northcote who was also 'called to the Bar, Inner Temple' in 1847.

Would these have taken place in London or Exeter please? Also, where can I find out more information on Henry Northcote's career.
