I'm pretty new to trying to trace my English and Welsh ancestors, My great great grandfather died in Wales but how do I go about finding him as the listings do not give details of spouses. Would appreciate any help I can get.

If he had a fairly common name you may have some difficulty I'm afraid.

If you know the year of his birth and approximate year of death look at:

www.freebmd.org.uk for deaths upto about 1950

www.ancestry.co.uk for deaths upto 2005

Compare age at death to date of birth. Remember that deaths are registered where they occur which may be a different location from where the deceased normally lived.

After 1869, the age at death is on the index.

After 1969 the DOB is on the index

and spouses names are not necessarily even on English or Welsh death certificates UNLESS the spouse is also the informant.

They are not nearly as informative as Scottish, or especially Australian certificates!

Hello Helen and welcome to the Community boards.

As well as the excellent advice given above, it may be helpful for you to put the names you are researching into the Search Trees box above to see if anyone else has them in their tree. If you find a connection, you can contact the tree owner.

After trying all of the above and you find you are still stuck, then if you post some details on here, I am sure someone will give you some more advice.

Thank you for this, I know he is still around in 1911, he was in Scotland with his son and granddaughter, when my great grandfather died him and his wife moved back to Wales leaving my great gran with the other grandchildren. His name was Thomas Bath and was born in 1848, I have his birth certificate, certainly costing money to order these and then discover you have the wrong ones.

Flick Report 3 Jan 2012 15:04

What was his wife's name?

When was she born?

The only Thomas Bath deaths in Wales after 1911 are for a man aged 64 in 1915, and one aged 46 in 1916

Did he have a second forename?

HIs father was James, but his mother is Ann, he was born in Farmborough. I have little bits of information, started my family tree in 2009, was registered with Genes but only recently started using it a bit more. I have family tree maker that I work on more often. Someone suggested I try Genes to see if I could gather any more info.

Deaths in England and Wales are supposed to be recorded on the GRO index which you can search on line, but most people have at least one relative who is 'missing'. It could be that their name has got mangled (George Henry instead of Henry George) or their age is recorded differently - the information recorded, is only as good as the informants knowledge. They may even have died away, and the death recorded, from their normal geographical area,

None of the certificates are available to browse though, whether at the gro or at the issuing register office. Possibly the closest you could get would be parish records if he was buried with a nominated church service rather than the duty clergyman. A family search centre close to you could order them in (and charge £10 for each film?)

Council Cemetery departments are usually quite helpful, but a number could charge for searching their registers. It could work out quite expensive if you don't know where he might have been buried.

What is your source for the info that he 'moved back to Wales'?

Try using the freebmd website................

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Is this his marriage?

I've got a copy of the marriage certificate. I have ordered the 1915 certificate to check it out

Flick

Flick Report 4 Jan 2012 21:52

I had already demonstrated that the 1915 death was NOT your relation........that's why I posted the 1891 census for the man!

You didn't answer the question in my last posting.

It is important that you take notice of all info and questions on posts when you have asked for guidance.............
