Who transcribed these newspapers ? This is an example of what you get in the search........

Looks a bit like Greek !!

They used OCR scanners. Unfortunately if the original print is not crystal clear (and some of the papers are very old) then the character recognition just can't cope and substitutes what it thinks the letter in question looks like.

What they should really do is run the converted text through some sort of spell checker and manually correct the dodgy characters.

You would have to click on each one to read the correct text.

Edit .....it's easier reading Parish Registers !

I had noticed the same thing on the American newspapers that I access. I thought it must be some type of electronic scanner.

Your better off logging into your local library using your library card and accessing the Nineteenth Centuary Newpapers there.

They only go up to 1900 though.

I have found the same issue on Trove but at least you can correct the text on the page.
