Hi,
Is there anyway I could go straight to the surname yr and qua of a birth to find the mothers maiden name? I put the details in the boxes and nothing comes up so would like to go straight to the page. If you understand me.

Where are you searching?

Best not to put details of a living person on these boards, but if you want to click on my name and send a message saying who you are looking for and where, I will take a look and send a message direct to you.

On FreeBMD, only part of 1959q1 has been transcribed, and nothing for the other 3 quarters. What you need to do is go to the home page - http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ and take the "view images" link - it's a kludgy interface, but you will eventually get to see the original GRO index page you want.

What is a Kludgy Interface please?
Thanks.

All BDM records on GR are up to 2006
If you check the birth on GR it will also show you the ref with the mothers name.

You may already be aware that for any BDM record the registration may be a different Qtr to the actual event. I always type in names with a years option sometimes even without a place. You can then look at them one by one until you find the correct one. First click on GR shows the mothers name. The optional image click shows the index ref :-D :-D

Jill - one that's kludged together.

NB After you've used it, have a guess.

Not tried it but I think I have an idea now. Thanks. Where did the word come from because it's wonderful? Or is it one you've made up? In our house as either writers or crafters we call a creative think a 'thunk'. xJ

Anne - please excuse the interruption.

Jill - it's a standard word - I've known it for abt 30y, but I've no idea how I know it (nor large chunks of my vocabulary - when my kids were teenagers and we'ld be sitting around the dinner table, they'ld always be saying "Dad, no one says that here").

I'm only aware of thunk as the past tense of think, not as a noun in that sense - of course it's a noun when it's equivalent to thwack.

I love this site for educating me. Going to paste the relevant part to print and put up by my computer.

I never thought of 'thunk' as a past tense word as I didn't think it actually existed in the dictionary. In our house that one word covers 'I'm going to have/I'm having/I need a creative think'.

I reckon I have a Kludgy brain. How wonderful. I'm no longer just plain slow. :-D

Apologies and thanks to Anne for letting her thread be hijacked. <3
