I'm transcribing a Church marriage in 1885 in Liverpool which isnt dated by day or month. Not come across this before and I wondered how GRO would send a copy out.
I know its in July and the previous entry is 13th but who else does?
Anyone else met this situation?

Does it show up on FreeBMD at all? The reference may help the GRO to find it. You do mean that there is no date in the church register? Wierd! Is the cert signed as it would be after the service? Maybe too much of the church wine :-) induced form-filling trauma.

The date may have been entered on the copy sent to the Reg office, even if it was an assumption.

Even though it isn't your relative, have a look as Jillian suggested on one of the gro data bases and see if you can spot it. If the signatures aren't on the original, could they have been no-shows and the marriage didn't take place?

Alan

I take it you are transcribing from the original register, if so...

When the quarterly return was sent to the GRO the marriage would be included in the year and quarter index as normal. That, hopefully, would be implied by the dates of the marriages surrounding the entry.

If anyone then requests a certified copy the GRO will provide a hand written/typed copy (not the usual photocopy) which will include any implied date.

It's only academic to me but the Wedding was by banns performed by a Minister and witnessed by 2 people and yes Chris, I'm transcribing from the original. GRO would see that Ceremony took place between 13th & 27th July.
I've not seen a Quarterly Return but I imagine that is subject to human error as well.

Family Whispers

Family Whispers Report 16 Jan 2012 16:24

The marriage between Elizabeth Jarvis & John MacDonald has been registered in Q3 1885 West Derby Lancashire.

Entry No. 360 is dated 13th Jul 1885, 361 is Elizabeth Jarvis & John MacDonald with no date, 362 is dated 27th Jul 1885.

For transcribing I would just put Jul 1885.

It is not unusual to have bits of info missing from church records, i have had most of the pages at one church where just the basic info was filled in.

Well done LA, I'm impressed. All I can do is leave blank where no detail is written.
For the Liverpudlians, the Ceremony was in St Judes which is situated under The Royal Liverpool Hospital.

One church record shows I've got an ancestors baptism taking place on 30th February, obviously it didn't. I even got staff at the records office to check I wasn't mis-reading it.

Oh I didn't know that Alan. I knew St Judes was knocked down but I didn't realise what was there now. Thanks!
