I’m trying to find info about my GG/F Daniel Smith, unfortunately I have very little to go on. This is all I know:-
Daniel is shown on my Grandfathers (James Peter Smith) marriage certificate dated 16/6/1917 as being deceased, however, his rank/profession is shown as RSM, 6th RHA. I believe that 6th RHA refers to the 6th Brigade RHA which was formed in 1901 in India and comprised B and C batteries. 6 RHA was posted back to Ipswich in 1902 and then to Woolwich also in 1902. 6 RHA was re-designated as 2 RHA in 1906.
My Grandfather was born in 1891 but I don’t know where. I assume Daniel was already in the army in 1891.
I have no info about Daniel’s date or place of birth or when/where or who he married.
I have trawled the internet but can find no info about him and very little about 6th RHA.
I realise its like looking for a needle in a haystack but can anybody out there please help.

Hi Glitterbaby,
On 1917 marriage cert James Peter Smith is shown as being 27 years old, bachelor, Driver at the School of Gunnery, shoeburyness (steward merchant service) his address is School of Gunnery Shoeburyness. Witnesses A. S. Lilly and A. Potter. The witness names mean nothing to me!
I have searched "Ancestry .co.uk" extensively for definate info on Daniel Smith but nothing I can verify in 1891, 1901 or 1911 census returns. I suspect that he may have been in the army and serving overseas in 1891 and 1901 and may well have been deceased by 1911, I just don't know.
If I could find records of 6 RHA postings 1902 - 1906 it would be helpful in identifying where he was serving.
If he reached the rank of RSM (Regimental Sergeant Major) he must have served for a long time in the army, I would expect 20 years +

Have you tried the National Archives for Daniels' Army record.

If he came out on a pension then his records may still be there. If he died in Service though I think his record may no longer exist.
