Michael Report 24 Jan 2012 11:47

I'm afraid that I think I have gone as far as I can with my family name and have hit a blank at my Gt, Gt, Gt, Gt Grandfather - John Simmons. from everything I have available, I have ascertained that he was born about 1786, probably in Mereworth, Kent. He is shown in the 1841 Census as living with his wife Rebecca (Nee) Perrin born 1780 - There is extensive detail available about the Perrin family that I am fully aware of. Also living at their address at Reeds Cottage, Mereworth is; Thomas Simmons aged 25 Agricultural Labourer, Henry Simmons aged 20 Agricultural Labourer, Mary Simmons aged 15 and James Simmons aged 13. I have received notification from another distant 'Simmons' relation that he believes our John Simmons died in 1864, aged 78. I find this hard to believe as I am unable to find him in the 1851 or 1861 Census and the Census for his wife in the 1851 Census shows her as being a widow and pauper and living with their son and my Grandfather 3 times removed - James Simmons.
I know that James Simmons and Rebecca Perrin were married on 12 August 1804 at All saints Church, Maidstone, Kent.
I would be very grateful if someone with more ability were to investigate and find anything that may assist in poining me in the right direction to find more detail about John Simmons.
Thank You
Mike Simmons (Deal, Kent)

Hope it doesn't sound too obvious but have you looked at www.familysearch. org
or joined the local family history where there may be transcriptions of parish records.
Another research I have looked at, although it is a jump of a hundred years is the Hearth Tax of the 17th century which may be kept at the local library. Not a lot of detail but it does tell you if someone with the same surname was at a location at that date, and how many hearths they had. -jl

Janet
Many Thanks for the reply. I am currently running through the IGI for the Mereworth area, there are hundreds of 'Simmons' recorded and I am trying to work out which ones are linked and how they all fall into my family tree. i had never previously heard of the 'Hearth Tax' but have had a quick check of that, though as you say it is a bit early for my 'John Simmons'.
