Hi Nicola

Yes it would have --*as per declaration* on it*if done in another area.

family tales can often get distorted, so you can assume the mother actually did it herslef and was in Plymouth at the time.......

edit,,,,a birth can not be registered post adoption.

i realise that she wouldve been taken into 'care' of some sort before the adoption was finalised. at the very l;east it would have to be done in case the birth mother changed her mind.
i myself think thats an awful journey to undergo even a couple of weeks after having a baby, but then again none of us know the personal circumstances of the lady and whether she had tried to conceal the pregnancy and needed to get back home.
perhaps she didnt go back to london, perhaps she went somewhere else in plymouth to recover and the lady i spoke to assumed she went back to london.
who knows, i was just wondering if the place that had care of her baby wouldve registered the birth for her.
i didnt know you could do it elsewhere.
ive checked the birth cert and it doesnt say 'as per declaration' on it so i will have to assume the birth mother did registeer the birth in plymouth.
thanks folks, at least this clears up any doubt

Think back to 1938, - TV prog on at the moment on a sunday eve- Would a woman that have just given birth travelled to London from Plymouth the day after givng birth? I'd have doubted that myself.

Even a child is ''given up'' The very shortest time in which they will be adopted is 6 weeks, there is a legal process to go through which takes time.

would it say on the cert 'as per declaration' if she registered the birth back in london and the details were sent to plymouth where the birth happened?
it says the birth mothers name in column 7 as the informant.
the birth address was researched and we checked the electoral rolls for the property for those years, after that we tracked down family of the people who were resident at the time and it turns out the birth mother was good friends with the people who owned the house.
the person i spoke to was present on the day the baby was given up, she still vividly remembers sobbing when they took the baby to the the place to be handed over.
she insists the birth mother went back to london the day after birth
so i wondered how she registered it in plymouth if she was in london,
so the birth mother mustve returned to plymouth 11 days later to register the birth, or she did it from london.
thanks for your help kay

It should state who registered the birth in col 7...it doesnt have to be the birth parent and could have been done at another area register office by * as per declaration.*but the informants name will be on it.......regardless of who.

if the informant was the mother then the family story *** apparently suposed happening*** didnt actually happen...

i have a family member who was adopted in 1938, apparantly she was 'given up' the day after she was born and her birth mother returned to london the same day. ( we have spoken to someone who was at the house at the time she gave birth and handed baby over) . we have got her original birth certifcate, but the birth was registered in plymouth 11 days after the birth mother returned to london.
the 'informant ' says the birth mothers name but i wonder if she would have actually registered the birth if she had already given the baby up, this is a typed document not a handwritten one. would the adoption agency have registered the birth?
