I remember finding a foundling in the 1851 census for Derby and his name was "Railway Boy" Very sad.

it's quite common to find "patients" and "inmates" of hopsitals, prisons, orphanages, etc, shown only by initials



it was a "privacy issue"





almost 200 years before privacy became an issue for us!

The use of initials happens quite frequently in places like workhouses, prisons and hospitals. It doesn't seem to be as common in later censuses, but I have found at least one example in 1911. It certainly makes research that bit harder and also dehumanises the inmates of the institutions

How sad Quoy on 2 levels. One for the children themselves being orphaned and not deemed important enough for their names to be spelt correctly.

Also for people trying to piece together their lives and not being able to identify them.

EDIT: I wonder whether there would be any records from the orphanage which may reveal who they are.
