I have just bought my first piece of software to back up my Tree---.FTM 2012 as recommended.
It says I can download my tree from Ancestry but can I download it from Genes? Anyone able to help me?
I have 803 on my tree now and am hoping I can. I am a bit what shall we say IT challenged lol :-D

It will not save directly from GR as it does from Ancestry.

You have to download from GR a gedcom file and then up-load to FTM2012.
If you have a tree on Ancestry FTM2012 will bring everything from your tree into the program and also link the two trees together.

You can download it from Genes in the form of a file - Go to your account and you will find an option to download an Gedcom file containing your tree.

When the email arrives opening the file should open it on your family tree maker. I did it with the same tree maker package so it must be fairly easy!!!

You don't have to make one. You just click on the option in your account to export your tree. It will be emailed to you. If you open the file it should automatically load into and open in your family tree maker.

Thanks Foggy and Kay I now just have to learn how to use the programme.
I will be able to rest easy that I will have my Tree backed up now as I have been relying on bits of paper and the Genes reunited site. :-)

How disappointing I have just found out that downloading from Genes you dont keep these records in the file whereas from Ancestory you do.

Never mind Julie, at least you have your tree on FTM which is a good program.

Don't forget to back up your tree regularly.
