Search Census using Wildcard characters?

Mis-spelled names so search using just start of name?

Please can anyone tell me how to search census records on GR using ***asterisks instead of some of the letters of the name in case they were mis-spelled on the census? I think it is called wildcard characters.

Also, I used to search and be asked if I wanted to look for variants (eg Browne or Braun instead of Brown), but this doesn't seem to happen any more.

Any suggestions gratefully received. :-)
