HI, A friend of mine says she's found a place called 'Thull Gaut Inn, on Lawnswood Road, Wordsley, (then Staffordshire) on a 1901 map.

I can't find anything to tell us what Thull or Gaut means or evidence of the Inn, can anyone help with a definition please?
Thanks

Is she sure that that is what is written on the map?
Thanks

There doesn't appear to be an inn on Lawnswood Road in 1901 census.

Dunno ah kid but thay do arf spake queer theer.

In 1901 both sides of Lawnswood road according to the emumerators book would have been in District 4 of Strourbridge Registration District, Sub District Kingswinford.

I have taken a quick look at the appropriate census pages but I can see no inn or public house of that name in the road.

Your post has reminded me of an incident there over 50 years ago. I was in my fathers car in that area and we became lost. My father stopped at a crossroads and asked a local for directions. The response was "Tek Hairy road". Which apparently meant take either road.

Not found anything obvious in 1911

Thank you all for your replies, Rachel (my friend) was intrigued by the name as we can't seem to find out if it means anything. the closest I could fnd was reference to an indian railway called thull Gaunt and thought maybe it was somethiing to do with the Stourbridge railway lines through the area.

There are archives containing deeds to the property and adjacent land in 1899 deposited in the name of the late Joseph Hill, so maybe he was the owner.

I've found a bit more, in 1883 Joseph Partridge and Thomas roberts filed for bankrupcy from the Thull Ghaut Inn, Lawneswood Road.

I have just had a look at that census for Josep[h Partridge and noticed that there are occupations of Flint Glass Makers. The name of the inn does look like Thul Glaunt. Could this have been a local name for a Flint Glass???????

Thanks Allotment, I did see this which led me to thinking the indian railway might have something to do with the name...not having seen the map myself I don't know where any railway lines sat in 1901. There's definitely small hillocks and dips around the area as it was all built on coal mines.

Mel, it could well be but I can't find a definition for the name.
