And one thing to remember is that many Catholic children if oprhaned (or put into homes) were brought up non-Catholic.

There are many folk out there who think their Irish ancestors were Protestant only to find that they were orginally Catholic.

It was common practice to change religion in this way at institutions as Catholic children were considered not to be employable or reliable.

A good way to find this out is to watch the Amanda Redman, Who Do You Think You Are? episode which explains a lot about this phenomenon.

Have you a specific name dates area where you are searching and importantly religion....this may narrow down your search....?
