I have an Elijah Rayner, b 1847 Crownthorpe Norfolk.
He moved to Islington London.

My question is,, I have found through Ancestry (Military) that it may have been him that served on HMS Alert and HMS Discovery. How would I find out any further information.

Thank you,
Sue

His naval record should be included in the online documents at the National Archives:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/navy.asp

Registers of Seamen's Services (ADM 139, ADM 188)
Service registers of more than 600,000 seamen in the Royal Navy, 1853 -1923

You can download the record for £3.50.

Thank you Potty,

I found it. Is that all the info that I would receive if I paid my £3.50 or would they send me more information.

Do you mean you have found Elijah's record, because I can't! If it was there, you would be able to download an image of his complete record, detailing all the ships he served on, when he was on leave, what punishments he received. There isn't a great deal of personal info (eg No notes of NOK, marriages, etc.

I notice in the 1901 there is a 3 year old Thomas living with Elijah and Julia. There is a birth on freebmd for a Thomas Elijah Rayner in Islington in 1888 and a baptism for him - BUT the father on baptism is William. Baptised the same day with the same parents is an Albert William.

Ancestry have a marriage for a William Rayner and Julia Hibbins in Islington in 1886. Did Elijah have a brother William?
