I am trying to trace the last resting place of Charles Thomas Ames.

I know he drowned at sea whilst swimming with a fellow able seaman from Steamer "Sellinge" during R&R.

Our family has the original letters of condolence to his mother from the ships Captain (Ross) detailing incident / recovery of body / burial in France. These confirm his death on 05.06.1939.

The letters confirm he was buried in Nantes France. Unfortunately it was just prior to the 2nd WW - therefore the Commonwealth Graves Committee have confirmed he is not in a war grave.

The British embassy are willing to check their records - but at a cost of £180!
I have tried to blindly search graveyard records in Nantes - but out of my depth and unsuccessful.

Can anyone help / offer advice?

I have no knowledge of searching in France, but I notice that Nantes is a twin town of several towns thoughout the world.
In UK it is twinned with Cardiff.
If you don't get answers on this thread, maybe you could contact the Twinning Association in Cardiff for help and advice.

The address Detective has given is for Nancy, not Nantes!

Nantes have digitised their burial records and his burial is here

Just put his suname in to "nom" box and it will come up!

I think the cemetery entrance is on Boulevard joliot curie (on the junction with) Rue Gabriel

which is just south of Saint Jacques Hospital
