http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd is a portal with links to online indexes from local rego offices.

Even if you've looked up a BMD ref in the GRO index, it's worth checking a local index.

Since the registers are organized differently, the local ref is different.
They don't always tell you what the ref is - sometimes it's on the pre-printed forms.
Even when they do tell, they don't always decode it, but a local ref should give which subdistrict register contains the birth/death,
or which church register contains the marr. Marrs are usually indexed by entry #, so one knows who wed whom.
Also, extra info might appear, like the mum's MS on births pre-1911q3, age of death pre-1866q1.
