Daughter-in-law?

In the 1851 census I have a household headed by Newark Featonby with his wife Elizabeth. Apart from a number of Featonby children there are two young women, Isabella & Jane Ovington aged 22 and 17 who are listed as Daughters in law.
Does anyone know if there was a different definition of Daughter in law back in 1851?

Hi Maureen

Daughter (or son) in Law was sometimes used instead of Step Daughter / Son.

Is this their

Marriages Jun 1850

Errington Robert Easington 24 151

>>>>>Featonby Newark Easington 24 151

HESLOP Elizabeth Easington 24 151
Jameson Hannah Easington 24 151
McCarthy William Easington 24 151

>>>>>>>Ovington Elizabeth Easington 24 151

Ridley Deborah Easington 24 151
Robinson George Easington 24 151

If so maybe the Featonby children were from a previous marriage of Newark

and the Ovington girls were Elizabeths

As Barbara said, daughter-in-law or son-in-law was commonly used up until the late 19th century for step-children.

A Public tree on ancestry says George Ovington married Elizabeth Raey in 1828.

and that George died in 1838.

so Jane and Isabella were Elizabeth's children from a previous marriage.

Thanks for the tip re step children - that could make sense.
I'd got the marriage of Newark and Elizabeth Ovington when he was aged 46 approx which seemed qute late so now I need to look closely at the other possible marriages from earlier in his life.
Many thanks for al the information above. Much appreciated.
