Adopted Person?

I am researching a person who I have been led to believe was adopted. I have found their birth registration details, but these are recorded twice in the same year. Firstly in September Quarter and then again in December Quarter. The second one gives full registration details, but on the first one there is the same Vol. no. as the second, but the page no. says 'See D'48'. The mother's maiden is the same in both cases.

Could anyone please tell me what 'See D'48' means. Thanks.

Could it have been incorrectly indexed in Sept, should have been put into Dec?

Almost certainly means the child was illegitimate at birth and was re-registered after the mother married - possibly to the father.

Indexes close at the end of each qtr

'SeeD'48' means look at the December quarter of 1948 for the same person.

I would then look at the marriage index between the dates of the two birth registrations for a marriage of the parents.

If the birth certificate shows in the end column that the child was adopted, this may be because a stepfather adopted them, having married the natural mother.

Thanks all for your help. I can find no marriage for the parents, so I think this one will have to continue to be a mystery for the time being.

The name they had after Penny.

If anyone can help by pm, I could give more details.

Thanks.

If you are looking for the adopted name then you won't find it in the birth indexes. The adoption register is not in the public domain and I'm not sure who can access it.

Thanks Kath x

I'm going to put this one on the 'back-burner' now.
