David - I use Roots Magic and like it. I've had it for about 6 years.

Having tried a number of programs I prefer FTM (Family Tree Maker) which I have now used for several years.latest version, FTM 2012, costs < £20 with one months Ancestry sub thrown in - other Ancestry packages are also available.

If you're looking for software........

Google for "genealogy software"......... you will find most of them, with "trial" packages. They hold up to 100 names, so you can try them out, see which one suits you best, before spending the dosh.

I, also, use Family Historian. Usually voted the best in FH magazines + its British. I have used it for some years and love it.

Family Historian.

But *most* people would probably say Family Tree Maker as the cost includes a limited subsription to Ancestry.
