Ancestry.com have been counting down for some time. No doubt they will also be transcribing it as quickly as possible.

If people have WW, they can get to the US (.com) home page by using the drop down box right at the bottom of the normal (.co.uk) page. You may have to sign in again.

Its good to know that familylink also offers US offering records.

The 1940 US census.

The site www.familylink.com is saying that images of the census will become available to view on its site on 2nd of April and that they expect most of the census to be indexed by the end of the year. It is an American site which offers a 3 day free trial and both monthly and annual membership, both at a not too exorbitant cost. Monthly $12.95PM, Annual $71.40PA.

The 1940 US census form included an interesting question, "Where were you living on 1st April 1935". Foreign born residents were also asked to differentiate in which country their birthplace stood on 1st of January 1937 and instead of stating for example, Ireland, they were asked to specify Eire or Northern Ireland. The answer given to those questions may help you to track some of your ancestors movements.
