I'm really not sure anymore. I don't think it would be Brighton as - if we are correct - the ancestors were around in London at that time although we can't even find a marriage for her father, if he is the right one too.

I think I'll leave it alone for a while and maybe go looking later on. Have lots of other things to do.

Once again many thanks for everyone's help in this.

I am wondering if the initial birth place of Brixton has always been wrong and should always have been Brighton.

My g/g/g/grandfather came from Southwark, but due to how he pronounced it on one census it was put down as Southwick. And this for some time caused me real problems until I thought about how our ancestors spoke. c.1840/50 many Londoners would have actually pronounced Southwark as Sothak (phonetically written) thus causing much confusion.

And as an aside you are lucky you only have a 5 year age gap. The above bloke married a woman whose age varied by as much as 11 years. It turns out she was about 7 years older than him and did not stick to her real age until after he had died!!! :-)

Phyll,

If you can find her in the 1911 census, it might tell you more about where/when she was born.

Thank you Rose. The main thing we are trying to find is Alice's birth certiificate or even the correct year. I am going off line now so will have another look tomorrow.

Phyll,

Looking at the Poole/Andrews birth they have to be in Eastbourne in 1911.

If you get this birth cert, the address might help you find them in 1911.

Births Dec 1911
Poole Male Andrews Eastbourne 2b 127

PS to my last update: Thomas Poole was a Baker - Journeyman

Chris

Yes that is the correct Thomas. He married Alice in 1905 and was killed in first world war. There is also the possibility that she kept changing her name around, i.e. on her son's birth cert she is down as May. Please don't spend too much time on this, it is great of you to help but I wouldn't want to stop you doing your own thing.

Many thanks

Phyll

Thanks but this is not right. I said in a message above we have certificates including her death in Eastbourne. Even on this it would seem her age is wrong.

Thanks one and all for your help. I don't think this is them in Ryde, IOW . It maybe but don't think so. We know they were in Eastbourne in 1905 so it could be possible that they were in Ryde. Why would it show their births as being Ryde if she was born in Brixton and he was born in Polegate, Sussex.

Alice's father is shown as deceased on marriage cert. I would say to you all, please don't waste as much time on this as we have over the past couple of months. We seem to be going round in circles all the time. Once again many thanks

I'm guessing she marries Thomas Poole?

Can you see them in 1911?

What occupation is given for her father on her marriage certs?

PigletsPal

We are working completely in the dark on this one. We are looking for Alice Lily May Andrews birth - nothing else. On 1901 census she is shown as being born in Brixton but living in Brighton. We have found someone on Ancestry who has her father as Fred but we do know for sure it was James.

Having seen various marriage & death certificates she has obviously lied about her birth date so she may have been born anywhere between 1879 and 1884. Three of us are working on this and all have hit the brick wall and it's DRIVING US MAD!!

Have you found the actual birth registration via FreeBMD?

If so the registration district is shown in the reference.

If someone was born in Brixton circa 1870 - 1890 what would be the most likely registration office please.

Many thanks
