My grandfather was born in Merthyr and staff at the local archive (above the library in Castle St.) were most helpful. From about the mid 1800's all burials in the area were done at Cefn Coed, a huge cemetery about 5 miles north of Merthyr. Part of this cemetery is unconsecrated ground to comply with the beliefs of some of the non-conformist churches. I had always associated unconsecrated ground with some form of wrong-doing, so had a bit of a shock when told that my great grandfather was in that part of the cemetery!! He died in 1886, so Cefn Coed was well established by then.

To add to Rollo's comment about records, Family Search has lots of non-conformist records, but very few for Wales. I read somewhere that the churches in Wales refused the LDS permission to look at any of their records, so the only ones they have are "submitted". I believe their new site doesn't have submitted records because they are so inaccurate - wishful thinking in some cases!!

Good Hunting.

You might mean Treorchy.
I use googlemaps to look up distances.
http://maps.google.co.uk/
This gives Treorchy to Pontypridd as about 9 miles, and to Aberdare about 12 miles.
Treorchy to Ystrad Rhondra about 2 miles.

Hi Annie

Sorry for the delay in my reply ... but its now 7am here .. and thank you for this info and your off of help.

Just a bit of geography info .. even though I have a map beside me..

The village of Treorcky comes up regularly in my searches of this family, so is this village far from Aberdare and also Pontypridd

I have the wedding cert of my ggranfather ..
David Davies and Elizabeth Abraham( shd read Abrahams), both of Treorcky, of 1879 at Nebo Chapel Ystrad Rhondda in Pontypridd .. if I got in touch with this chapel, would it be a help ??

Cheers

Try and contact a local family history society for lots of local information and advice, such as:

:-S :-S

Good evening..

I know this is a needle in a hay stack, but I feel I need some ourside input to shed new light on this family..

I am starting with a ..
Phillip Davies bc 1850 .. Merthyr Tydfil .. parents of David Davies of Llansadwrn and Ann Jones of Llangyndeirn

I have them all in 1851 census as DAVIS, staying with Ann's widowed mother (Elizabeth Jones) in Penydarren Merthyr Tydfil
In 1861 census , I have David and Ann and Phillip, and other members of the family in Aderdare (including a William Davies, who is Davids brother, found on parish records)

My problem is.. I cannot find any of these children on parish records on any of the usual sites, ( other than BDM index, and its almost impossible to pinpoint them exactly)

Is there someplace I have missed, would love some guidance on this .. ??? ???
.. PLEASE ..

Many tks in advance
Karen of Brisbane
