Many thanks for all these replies. I know he did not marry. All the census refs above are correct, and I did realise that he could have been born in Bournemouth or London or wherever. Although I had tried variations in spelling, I do not think I have tried Bertrand. Thanks Kath. I will try that.

The birthplace info for 1891 would have been given by the head of the household, who may not have had a clue

If Annie wasn't married, it well be that she went away from home to give birth.

Where was Annie in 1891?

Can we assume that he didn't marry?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 12 Apr 2012 16:15

I think the child in that entry would have been recorded as age 2 in 1891

I know he says born Bournemouth but I notice they are living in St. Marylebone district in 1901. Do you think he could have been born there? There is this birth although the surname is slightly different but could be a mistake:-

Name: BERTRAND, Male (unnamed)
Registration district: Marylebone
County: London
Year of registration: 1889
Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's maiden name: Not available before 1911 Q3
Volume no: 1A
Page no:586

If the 1891 census record that Choccy found is the correct person then it says born London (and I usually find that the place of birth given on the earliest census after birth is usually more likely to be correct.

Was the mother actually a widow? Or was she saving face by referring to herself as one?

Hi,
I am seeking ideas on how I can obtain further info. on the above. I have found him on three censuses for 1891 + 1901.+ 1911. These all indicate a year of birth of c1889.I also have his death certificate which shows his age as 74 in 1963. In 1901 he is living with his widowed mother, Annie Bertram, aged 46.
What I have not found is Dick's birth certificate, despite trying various websites. Nor have I found his parents' marriage certificate. I also know that he had left his eyes for medical research after he died. I have a vague memory that I was told that would delay funeral and burial / cremation. However I have been unable to trace any record at all of burial / cremation.
Like so many things, I should have investigated earlier! Any ideas much appreciated

Jenny
