Hi Dizzi.
I eventually found my mothers workhouse birth record naming her Ellen but on her birth certificate she was Alice Florence. I replied to another thread on a similar subject last week and how sad I felt for them both. A reply back said mothers opted to go into the w/house for free confinements, but I have found that my grandmother was transferred from another workhouse just for the birth. The year was 1912 .

My gt.grandma had a child about four years before marrying gt. grandfather.I knew the child, called Thomas, was born c.1865 and I could trace him through the censuses from 1871 on up to his death in 1930 but could never find his birth. Then, while looking at workhouse records for another family member, I discovered gt. grandma had entered the workhouse the day Thomas was born (15.1.1865) and he was baptised 11 days later in a sort of job lot of workhouse babies and named Walter! No wonder I couldn't find him.

I think a lot of poorer women went in to the workhouse to have their babies because they got better care there than at home. According to the records my gt.grandma discharged herself and her baby after three weeks "when well".

WHILE SEARCHING FOR A BIRTH I NOTICED
MOTHERS NAME 1883 & 1885 BOTH CHILDREN ONLY MOTHERS SURNAME,WHEN I VIEWED THE IMAGE IT WAS A WORKHOUSE AND NONE OF THE BIRTHS HAD FORNAMES ONLY MALE/FEMALE SO THAT COULD BE WHY SOME BIRTHS ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND
