Thank goodness,I had started to think was I searching on the wrong tree.

Iv'e had the Irvine name for 66 years and I don't know if it's the way I say it or the listeners ears but Ive had my name written as Urvin,Elvin Irving many times.

I forget the exact numbers, but I think there are 11 known signatures of William Shakespeare - and these exhibit 6 different ways he spelled his surname.

Spelling was not so important then, in many ways.
As long as the surname spelling sounded right, variations often occured.

Often the couple didn't...or couldn't....check the spelling and therefore many families find these variations.
My main surname interest has 4 usual variations, all within the same family group and dependant on which clerk recorded the details.
I record them all with just one spelling on my home computer, as it's easier to search, but I make a note of how they were actually written. The same people are often recorded with different spellings at different events.

Education was lacking in 1869.
Possibly the parents could not read or write.
The name was entered by the church official as he heard it.

Ive been looking at the baptism record of Francis Ervine b4/5/1869
His Father's name is given as Francis Ervine, his Mother's name as Rose Anna Galloway.

Since the family name is IRVINE why are my GGR & GGF listed as Ervine?
Could it be a genuine spelling error or maybe a variation?
