For our marriage in 1986 our witnesses were the best man and chief bridesmaid/maid of honour (is that right if she is married?). Never seen the parents' marriage cert but maternal grandparents had a relatives from the maternal side which led me to a previously unknown person.J |

Very often the Parish Clerk would be one of the witnesses. When you look at some parish registers the same name occurs as a witness in several of the marriages. |

It would be the witnesses. They can be anyone, don't have to be relations/friends/members of the church. My father was a registrar and sometimes the couple turned up alone (ultimate quiet wedding) and had to ask complete strangers off the street to be witnesses! |

Or they could be "professional" witnesses - a church regular that may appear time after time as a witness, maybe if the couple didn't have a big congregation. |

It depends on what year the marriage was. Most of my early marriage certificates it tends to be either one of the parents or a brother or sister. |

So, would that mean friends or family |

On most certificates this phrase is used before the witnesses names. |

Can any one tell me what "In the presence of" means, is it family or friends or people of the church. I have a certificate from Ireland in 1908 |
