Why would a bride's father's name be written, then crossed out on a marriage certificate from 1924? This person/the 'father' was had died 2 years previously but why not write 'Deceased'? However, there is a question as to whether he was the father or not, so could this be the reason? Also, the bride's birth certificate does not name a father.
To explain better - Ada Walker is born in 1899. Her mother is Mary Walker (nee Bailey) who married John Walker and is living with him and Ada's older siblings on 1891 census. By 1901 John Walker is not mentioned and Ada Walker is living with her mother Mary and the older siblings as 'Boarders', at the home of Abraham Sherrard with his children (no wife) in Hucknall, Nottighamshire. Abraham Sherrard and Mary Walker later marry in 1915. He dies in 1922.
Is he her father, if so, why not name him on the birth certificate or call her Ada Sherrard?? What happened to John Walker, I can't find a death? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

because he either wasnt the father or had died or just deserted them..
if he wasnt the father ,back then it was frowned on to give false information as there was no proof tests.....

and all these details are given prior to a marriage taking place when its booked and on the day all thats neded is to sign the register everything else is filled in ready........,,,,,,,,perhaps by that time it came to light John Walker wasnt her father.and it had to be scrubbed out.?

Apologies, I did not make it clear - the name that is crossed out on the marriage certificate is Abraham Sherrard not John Walker.

Do you know, would any extra information be held at the church where they were married?

Assuming that they married in a C of E church the church register would be the same as on the cert as the church register is the original and all other entries are copies of it.

I would think that as Ada Walker had been living in the household of Abraham Sherrard since at least 1901 when aged 2 and that he became her stepfather when he married her mother in 1915 it was only natural that she considered him her father even if he was not her biological father.

Taking this post in conjunction with your other post concerning the Holmes/Barker marriage in Mansfield it would seem as if the ministers or registrars in Nottinghamshire were fussier than most when it came to recording a brides fathers details.

It is unlikely that the church will have any more information but you will never know until you ask.
