ROY Report 28 Apr 2012 14:26

I am looking for the parents of Henry Ball.
The 1911 census has Henry born St Georges East London born abt 1865
The 1901 census has Henry born in Wapping London born abt 1865
I know the 1901 census is correct because of the address and I know
Henry married Charlotte McIntyre in 1893.
I also know Henry's father was a Robert Ball and he was a Shipwright. This I found on Henry's marriage certicate. But I cannot find Henry Ball's birth certificate details anywhere and I cannot link a Robert Ball ...

Please help this is driving me crazy !!! I have ordered a birth certificate for a Henry Ball born in 1868 but i think this is not my Henry, waiting in anticipation ! :-S

It may well be his birth wasn't registered . There were no penalties before 1875 for non registration

Does it tell you anything else on the marriage cert that may help such as occupation of Henry or if Robert is dead or alive ??

Prehaps a middle name for either of them

Eileen Report 28 Apr 2012 15:28

There is a Henry Ball born 7/8/1858 baptised 6/6/1860 St G in East
parents Robert (shipwright) and Mary Anne of 15 Greenbank
At same time a daughter Maria born 14(?) 5 1860
I wonder if he knew how old he was,or did the census taker get it wrong.

Further to Eileen's find re Baptisms of Henry & Maria it looks like another child was baptized on 9 Jun 1860 and is the last entry on the previous page

Caroline born 6 Oct 1856

Looks like poor little Caroline might have died not long after she was baptized.....if she was ill perhaps this prompted the family to have Henry & Maria baptized at the same time
Deaths Jun 1860
BALL Caroline St geo East 1c 294

also Maria's birth date was 19 May 1860

According to the Baptism for Henry he was born 7 Aug 1858 so the following is a possibility for his birth registration

Births Sep 1858
Ball Henry St Geo East 1c 405

Well thanks everybody for your quick responses,

Choccy... the Robert Ball from Lancashire looks like the same family as the Robert Ball from Bristol...could this be right ?

And as Kempina stated was Henry married twice, first to Alice Pearson and then to Charlotte McIntyre,

I know on Henry and Charlottes marrage certificate it has them down as living at number 6 Albion Street, Deptford.

And Henry who was married to Alice was living at number 7 Albion Street Deptord...strange or what !

But according to the 1891 and 1901 census there is a 5 year age difference...still baffled..but many thanks guys !! ;-)

Think the 1861 is mis-transcribed as to Robert's birth place. It's very difficult to read and could be anything!

Think Bristol is probably correct.

KempinaPartyhat

KempinaPartyhat Report 29 Apr 2012 12:37

Roy the reason I said that he married twice is because in tthe marriage banns for Charlotte it says he was a WIDOWER so guess its a second marriage

The fact that he married what seems to be the girl next door is quite normal in the days with no cars or that fact that they could have been friends before his first wife died
