Does anyone know where I can find out if some of my ancestors were travellers or just migrant workers? My nan always said her Dad was from gypsy stock and I have been able to find out that his Dad was born in County Cork but appeared on the late 19th century census' for London and was always listed at more or less the same address and listed as a dock worker! The only strange thing is, that despite this my great Grandfather went on to marry a girl from Wales, in Wales and neither of them appear on any census' for a period of about 20 years. Wasnt sure if anyone knew if they would be listed as Travellers or some other discription on records. Any info or advice would be very much appreciated.Thank u.

Would you like to give your great grandparents names and any known facts such as birthplace or age, so that others can help search for them
Maybe their names have been mis-transcribed.
I've lost count of the 'weird and wacky' spellings for some of mine.

Another good source for information on travelling families is Rootschat. It is free to join and is a 'chat' site like here, but with no trees.

There are different sections dedicated to many different subjects relating to Family History/Genealogy. And one subject is Travelling people.

Do yourself a favour and join. As said it is FREE and many of us on here are also members of Rootschat. I have found it invaluable, especially for the more specialised queries.

There are two sites which "specialise" in travellers/gypsies

Romany Genes
Romany Jib

Mostly to the South West but there are a lot of Census results with traveller info
