I was wondering what the answer was to this,

The link GlitterBaby posted if you pardon the pun was an eye opener
would never thought such scrutiny took place on immigrants

Gerry Report 8 May 2012 19:06

In April 1911 my wife's Grandfather sailed to the USA on the Cunard's Carmania from Liverpool.

In his first letter to his wife he gives a lot of detail about the journey and wonderful food. He also told how when they boarded the ship they "had to pass the ship's doctor. He examined the eyes of each passenger ........"

Does anyone know why all the passengers' eyes were examined before they were shown to their cabins???????

A very puzzled Gerry :-))
