Often in cases like that, I would note down the possible spouse names, then look at the next census or two (in your case 1891 or 1901) and try to find a match between the spouse and the person you are researching.

Here's a look up for John Smith in 1889 on FreeBMD

Marriages Jun 1889 (>99%)
Grey Ethel Jessica Fanny Lucy Tetbury 6a 659
Grey Fanny Lucy Tetbury 6a 659
RAWLINGS John Tetbury 6a 659
Smith John Tetbury 6a 659
UNDERHILL Matilda Tetbury 6a 659

However, the GRO isn't the only place I can buy an m.cert.
I can also buy it from the local office that now holds the Tetbury registers (and I can even buy it from the church, if it's in their current rego).

Now some local offices have their indexes online - see:
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd
Of interest here is
http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/

So a lookup here gets

Groom Surname Groom Forename Bride Surname Bride Forename District Parish Building Year Register Entry
SMITH John GREY Fanny Lucy Cirencester Tetbury St Mary the Virgin 1889 2 390

The local index usually indexes marrs by entry #, not page #, so you can see who wed whom.
If you browse thru the rego at the local records office, say, it's handy to know the entry # (=390 here).

Found her on that site you gave me, then had to go to ancestry to find her but at least I knew where I was looking. She didnt stay in the areas I thought she would of been.

Hello all,

On free BMD I have found a marriage for the person I am looking for. However when I go to ancestry I cant find it. I was hoping to find out which of the two men she married. Or isnt that available. Many thanks Anne
