HI,
I need some advice on how to go forward if possible with an ancestor of my husbands that I came across yesterday.
She is Spanish! her name is Gertrude born about 1816 Minorca Port Mahon, Spain,according to her husband Thomas.
I have her on the 1841 census with her first husband Thomas Butterworth an artist, living in Greenwich London,with their children.
Her husband dies.
She goes on to marry Augustus Good in 1848

She gives her fathers name as John Meistess,deceased.
She cannot write in English as she makes her mark,so I reckon the spelling's etc may be down to the Vicar?
After that long drawn out explanation of her,what I would like to know is.
How do I search for her entry into England.I've tried searching on Ancestry with her name Gertrude Butterworth,also different spellings of Meistress eg Mestres.I have tried searching for her father also with his name as given and also as Juan Mestres,just in case.
I'm not confident with searching abroad and hope that someone can give me some pointers please.
Or find her entry into the country.
All most feel like booking a holiday to Port Mahon!

As far as I'm aware there will be no records of her entering the country. Things like that did not exist. The fact she was married to an Englishman would suffice.
Have you tried the RA to develop the artist side of the story.
He may have been a war artist employed by the Navy or Army. Perhaps they met in Spain and he brought her back.
If I were you, I'd go to Menorca for a weeks holiday and make some enquires. It's only a small place.

If you google search 'Thomas Butterworth artist' you will get some info - notably:
Thomas Buttersworth (5 May 1768 – November 1842) was an English seaman of the Napoleonic wars period who became a marine painter. He produced works to commission, and was little exhibited during his lifetime.
Life
Butterworth was born on the Isle of Wight. He enlisted in the Royal Navy in London in 1795, and served on HMS Caroline during the wars with France, before being invalided home from Minorca in 1800.
The National Maritime Museum in London has 27 watercolours by him, several of which are mounted on sheets from 18th century printed signal and muster books. He went on to paint numerous naval battle scenes and pictures such as the ‘'Inshore Squadron off Cadiz in 1797'’ which are thought to show scenes he witnessed. On being appointed Marine Painter to the East India Company he painted ship portraits on commission. It had been thought that he died in 1830, but recent research has found that he painted Queen Victoria’s visit to Edinburgh in 1842 before he died in London later that year.[1]
His son James Edward Buttersworth (1817-1894) also became a maritime painter.[2]

Birth year doesn't fit mind! Maybe it is his father? It would fit with Minorca connection. I would tend to agree that they married there, not sure how you can research this further really.

Thank you for the link to the Spanish Genealogy site.
I did Google Thomas Butterworth and read the bumf on him but decided to my self that the birth didn't match.
However,
So many things do.I have found a private members tree on Ancestry which has Thomas and Gertrude on it along with a marriage for them in it
Thomas Butterworth Birth: 1811 Death: 1842 Marriage: 1832 - Algeciras, CAdiz, Andalucia, Spain Spouse: Gertrude Buttersworth nee Miestress.
I have written the the tree owner and am waiting for a reply.Thinking maybe my Thomas is the son of the 1797 one.

If I find out any thing concrete about the connection to the artist mentioned I'll add to this post,just out of interest

Thomas b. 1768 had a son called Thomas as well as one called James:
Born on the Isle of Wight, this important British marine artist enlisted aboard the receiving ship H.M.S. Enterprise in 1795, then joined the frigate H.M.S. Caroline the same year. Buttersworth became able bodied seaman at 27 and midshipman in 1800. He was discharged after an injury at the Mediterranean port of Minorca.
He had begun painting while aboard H.M.S. Caroline in 1796. While a patient in Minorca he further honed his skills and created several Mediterranean scenes. He also painted views of the battles of Cape Saint Vincent and Trafalgar, probably from memory as he was on site for these historic battles during his sea service.
He was appointed official marine painter to the East India Company in 1810, gaining a strong reputation that led to exhibits at the Royal Academy (1813-1827), the British Institute and Suffolk Street Galleries. His prominence as one of England's pivotal marine artists is well established. He is noted for his dramatic portrayals of naval battles and coastal shipping, and as father and teacher of acclaimed American marine painter James E. Buttersworth and Thomas Buttersworth, Jr. <<<
