Thanks to everyone. Some of the info I already had, but there is some new stuff which is really interesting, the good old catholic church. Will work through the above info.

Thanks again.

Clare :-D

Nathaniel and Mary's marriage is in the Catholic records on scotlandspeople and also in the OPRs. This may explain why:

It is entirely possible that banns of marriage for a Catholic couple were called in the (Presbyterian) Church of Scotland. Due to a complicated legal situation, the Church of Scotland was seen as the only legal place for banns to be called. In some cases, this means that you will find a Catholic marriage being recorded in Church of Scotland Old Parish Records (OPRs), however it is highly likely that the marriage actually took place elsewhere in the presence of a Catholic priest. Additionally, it may be that you find a record of a Catholic marriage in the OPRs, but no corresponding record in the Catholic Parish Registers, and this might be due to there being no surviving Catholic Parish Register for that area or time period; or that records were not kept at that point due to the laws against Catholics in force during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Since he married in Dundee Angus..it is likely that's where he came from, becasue it was not Mary's Parish..coc she came from Ireland

His crime, by the way was. "Larceny by Servant"..and there is some suggestion. that he died 1841..don't ask me for evidence..its a suggestion.

and Angus is a good old Gilchrist stronghold!! and no i'm not related.
EDIT..by the way..if you look carefully he was married in a Roman catholic Church..Mary O'Hara was lmost certainly a catholic....and if he was too. then you're in trouble, because RC records are rarely publically availabe.

Interestingly, familysearch has his marriage twice. Once in the Parish Church and also in the Catholic church, although one could be banns.
