Just been going through some really old stuff regarding my grandfather who's birth I have never been able to confirm. These items are about 15 years old.

One birth record is from SP and the other I think is one someone sent from RH in Edingburgh.

I think I must be going batty as they are def the same person with the same parents...but one is a birth in Denniston and the other Milton. They both have the same registrar and both are dated same day. The only difference being is the Milton one seems to have two names in the registrar column, although I am unable to make out what it says.

Can anyone shed any light on the matter I am baffled!

Just noticed running up side of the Milton entry is written Denniston and another word I am unable to read.

If its from Scotlands People then it would need units to view any info.

The Denniston one is from SP I can read that fine, just puzzled why two? On one it gives the time of birth at 4.30 and the other at 12.30. Obvious that the Milton one with writing on the side is saying registered at Denniston I think!

are they less than 100 year old births?


perhaps a l any registrar they do make mistakes on entires.

Hi Kay"...... The birth occurred 29th May 1887 at Barony maternity hospital so why registered Denniston and Milton. I won't sleep tonight! ;-)

Maybe one is registered outside the area it should have been done so was done again in the right area but notes that it was also reg in Denniston

Why not contact Glasgow City Council Registration office ( 0141 287 7652) and you may be able to speak to one of the Registrars who may be able to advise you. Denniston and Milton are both within Glasgow Council registration area.

The rules as to where a birth is registered are different in Scotland.

In England/Wales a birth has to be registered where the baby was born, regardless of where the mother lived. In Scotland, since 2007 (I think) a birth can be registered anywhere. Before that the birth could be registered either where the baby was born or at the home address. Back in Victorian times this was probably the same place.

Re the above, Dennistoun is part of Glasgow but Milton is near Dumbarton, in what was then Dunbartonshire (now West Dunbartonshire). The only reference I can find for The Barony says it was in Lenzie, also in Dunbartonshire but nowhere near either Milton or Dennistoun.

Do you have addresses for the family in any of the above places? My guess is that the baby was born in one and "lived" in the other, and the birth was registered by two different people, each trying to do the right thing. Only a guess though!

Back in time, Milton was an area in the north of Glasgow ... later known as the Cowcaddens.

There used to be four parishes in Glasgow. City, Govan, Gorbals and Barony. ..

Barony covered the wide area in the north and east of Glasgow. This would have included Dennistoun.

As Helen has said Glasgow used to be made up of 4 parishes -City, Govan, Gorbals and Barony which included lands in the north of the city including Denniston and Milton.
The reference to Barony in Lenzie was the Barony Parochial Asylum which opened at Woodilee, Lenzie in 1875.
Ann I think the Barony Maternity Hospital you mention was probably Glasgow Maternity Hospital (Rottonrow) which was built in 1834 and was next to the Barony Church, now the Barony Hall which is part of Strathclyde University.

If an error was discovered in an entry, a corrected document may be issued if the correction cannot be made on the original and may be signed by another registrar. The need for a correction is usually written in the left side of the document showing which item in the original was incorrect. I once found dual documents at Register House Edinburgh relating to a birth in 1915 where the mother declared the father to be her husband (away at the War) and later admitted it was another man!
