Ancestry has just extended the range of date coverage of the probate calendar. It is now possible to search the index from 1858 to 1966.

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966

Jonesey, Thanks for this,

It has opened my eyes a little about the difference between what is on the probate calendar and what is in the final account's of a will that is in my possession

Can I ask what info shows up on the search? Does it give any info as to where any money left went? Or is it just a tool to guide you in the direction of the will itself?

I'm very curious about a handful of people on my tree and I'm thinking of taking a sub to A at some point.

Thanks.

Jill,
You usually get......

Full name of deceased and date of death.
Home address ( could just be name of village)
Sometimes location of death
Who probate was granted to and their status, eg. widow... This might not be widow of deceased.
Total effects in £s.

I'll take a look for your names, if you want.

Hi Gwyn,

Thanks. That would be lovely. I'll pm you later on. Will take a look at which people I want to know more about rather than be badly rude and send you far too many names.
:-D
